Summer School: Interrogations at the Biointerface - The nano / medicine interface from 28 of June to 3 of July 2015 in Porto, Portugal
overview

The Nano/Medicine interface has been raising considerable interest in recent years. Based on this interface, novel techniques, research and therapeutic approaches are being developed. In this edition of our Summer School we will bring closer immunologists, cell biologists, medical doctors and biomaterial scientists to discuss what is becoming an exciting and stimulating new interdisciplinary area of research.

INEB (Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica), University of Porto, IPATIMUP (Instituto de Patologia e Imunologia Molecular da Universidade do Porto) and IBEC (Institut de Bioenginyeria de Catalunya, Barcelona) organized a series of Advanced Summer Schools under the general theme of Interrogations at the Biointerface. IBMC (Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular), University of Porto has recently joined to this rewarding adventure. These Summer Schools run alternatively in Porto and Barcelona, preferably around the 23rd of June. In Barcelona, San Juan is taking place in the night of the 23rd June and is known as the "night of fire". São João is the biggest festival of Porto calendar, and one of Europe's liveliest street parties.

In Barcelona, San Juan is taking place in the night of the 23rd June and is known as the "night of fire". The night of 23rd of June is also the festivity of São João, the biggest festival of Porto calendar, and one of Europe's liveliest street parties…worthwhile to visit!

INEB, IPATIMUP and IBMC, founder members of the new Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), are now hosting the 5th Advanced Summer School of the series that will focus on the Nano/Medicine Interface and be held in Porto from the 29th June to the 3rd July 2015. This year's Summer School has the duration of four days and includes lectures and hands-on lab sessions. Participation will be credited with 2 credits according to the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). For more information go to registration.

The 2nd of July will be intercalated with another symposium that INEB is organizing: “SICR-The First Symposium on Immunomodulation in Cancer and Regeneration”. Summer School full course participants are invited to participate in this Symposium free of charge. Participation requires however registration. For more information please consult: www.SICR2015.ineb.up.pt.

A previous series of advanced courses run by INEB was held also at this time of the year. The general theme was Cell-Biomaterial Interactions and over 100 participants from ca. 12 countries attended each course. Distinctive features of these courses were: top-notch scientists, mainly from Europe and the United States, were invited as guest speakers; two days of hands-on lab sessions on advanced laboratory techniques were organized for a limited number of participants (ca. 20); the targeted audience were PhD students and post-Docs; posters presented by students were discussed in detail with faculty members, who stayed for the first three days. A relaxing atmosphere and a (usually...) nice weather also helped in making these courses a success.
